The True King Is Always Weary On The Road

the true king is always weary on the road
a little down at heel so none would know
there goes a king

and invite him in
at least, for show,
and feed him teacakes, honey,

fruit pies by the score
(the frosted kind, in little packages)
and give him carfare in case of emergencies,

a lunchbox filled with sandwiches
of the rarest kinds
(imagine this in your mind);

what delicacies!
oh, but alas, he has no looking glass
and so does not comprehend

the state he's in
or understand why
his own people

deny him.
