Like As Not

fairy goods for sale
the small sign pealed
the little wagon rolling

up the ant hill
come and buy
silk the colour of a

vireo's eye
one ivory lullaby
and pink sachets

the fragrance of
what you wore that day
you played on the piano

some pale carnation roudelay
and the kingdom breathed it in
and Grandmother said begin, begin

beginning is everything in practice
and in stories too
if I were you

thats what I'd do
and buy a fairy comb or two
set sparkling by the evening dew

a shawl so milkweed bright and then
some dishes willow green
Old Ben tolling on a charm bracelet

a gown of tulle
and a wand to match the golden rule
the golden rule the golden...

needle's stuck on the tutor's phonograph
imagine that, a rosy lane,
a latch to lift on a bargain cottage

all the same to you,
larch and cool
like as not,

and nnder the hill...
