Midland Carol

they said her tears were crystal in the story books
they said many things:
the heart has reasons of its own:

reasons for leaving.

in the carol there's no grieving

the sound of bells the cascading sound
of golden rings

the partridge with its ruby eye

set in the branching silvery tree.
thus in the season of His birth

the children skipping in the summer shade

maid to maid and like a rosy chain
vanished into the wintry parade

so the silhouettes of paper, snowed

figures of the long ago
cast on a shadowed screen

seem sometimes to resemble us

woke out of a Christmas dream.
