Picking The Colours

we wanted pink stars over the castle,
maybe green.
chartruese my sister said

well it's your dream, go ahead
and so we did
colouring on Sunday afternoons

or at school with the paper passed out
and our very own crayons just before noon
and cafeteria food

deciding if turquoise blue

would make the scene
or turquoise green
and making sure

small flowers in the grass
o unsurpassed
would all be pink

and no mistake

and the lake the lake
cobalt blue.
I remember our content

as the day spent itself down
all candle wax proud
and melting

that free we were, like God
or someone close to Him
picking the colors for a world.
