this poem very indirectly is a tribute to the books my Grandfather
bought us: The All About Series.and to his pointing out to us,The Constellations
the art of looking carefully at the moon
I wanted to study in school
that was not permitted
not after the Space Program
I made things out of aluminum foil
slightly resembling stars
my dog barked silverly at the Dog Star
I couldn't blame her
she just wanted to say something in puppy.
how we laughed back then
and ate star cookies Christmas cut outs
strawberry jam at the center.
it was midwinter and the caroling time
it was time for Jesus and his particular star
for Christmas candles bought at the bazaar
at night at school when all the stars were out
and school looked so bewitched the moon
coming through all the crepe belled classroom windows
half ajar.
I wonder where they are now, all the stars we watched back then
who watched us too
thinking on our small stools drawn up to the feast
nothing nothing will ever end.
