I guess no one thought it could be that important
even though God himself sent his angels there first
and maybe only there. Ever heard a sermon on that,

you know He hobnobs with the riff raff.
those shepherds with their staffs.
guess we'll pass this time.
they brought the meeting to a close
and went out into the winter wind.
their duty done.
not a tinker's glance toward the bus station.
not even one
talking of this and that
their last vacations.
sure of their salvation.
