The Things You Do Not Know Yet

the things you do not know yet keep you from harm
at least for the time being until the charm wears off,
time being an unknown quantity

some things reassure.
the sun is still there.
even though your shadow alters

on the lawn and birds have not lost
the power of song though in some quarters
poetry has

try not to take to heart
the passing comments yelled from cars
when you are out walking.

remember that angels walk with you or float
slightly above the cracks in the sidewalk,
cobblestoned, curbed

to spare your mother from harm.
