CLINGING TO THE SUNFLOWER HOUR
Clinging to the sunflower hour
I make my case to still live in the sun
Until my sunflower clock is run
And on my stalk to smile and wave
At the unceasing bright parade
Of cornstalks under a Kansas sky.
Who am I to afford such glory
Even a field of sunflowers seen through a train window
Speeding by has caught In the honeyed lattice
Of my mind
And will not let me go from so many years ago
I am on sunflower time
Oh Lord, I plea in sunflower rhyme
Oh Lord of the sunflowers
Cherish me.
As you do them.
To have made them with such a cheering heart.
