maybe they said kind of jocularly
when asked what do you do
at the occasional party.
let's get this show on the road
I saw them in the newsreels
back on the job
a day in the life of
for the camera .
and play the ventriloquists
out of hand
we'll hire finger puppets
and let the rest starve.
but we found beauty another way
and played at disappearing ourselves
and found God hiding in the draperies or
looking at the books on the shelves.
all will be well we heard from somewhere downstage
a voice that used to call us into supper
and all the flowers cast in blue pools
of ever diminishing light.
