You Can Watch The News If You Want To

for the first time ever on our stage
the paper flowers in water will come to life
next to the aqua S&H green stamp Lamp

ordered from the catalog.

we will eat orange slice candy
and grow strong
and play we are Pippi Longstocking in the yard

and can skip school as we skip rope: enthusiastically
and everything else except the crystal day
knowing we can rely on Horse

and the chest full of pirate gold
somewhere stowed in the rickety house.
and we'll have teacakes frosted in pink

and keep the lemon drop sun in our zigzag stitch
calico dresses' pockets minding the lucy locket Grandmother
admire ourselves in the rains pooling opal

holding gilt rainbows at bay and the bunched up flowers tied in blue ribbon
we will freely give away.

you can watch the news if you want to
we have summer things to do.
coke floats and stray kites of gold

that fly into the forevers

just because our Grandfather smiles, back from Sea
beckoning us, collecting for us coral and ivory;
fairy tales we can trust like the golden encyclopedias

the pure silver righteousness of stars
because we want to.
