today something wonderful happened
the sun rose like a white gold disc
none of us put it there
not even our best artists, workmen
with the longest ladders
the birds floated on air, on the updrafts
of this october wind
I know;I saw them
their music, in faint drifts with the clouds.
I sang the color green outloud outloud outloud
and it was everywhere in lingering summer's leaves
and I cried oh God thank you for not leaving us alone
so that the seas innundate the earth
and so that stars could fall with a crystal clanging
and we forget to breathe
on earth
