(first in a sequence of poems entitled 'Children As They Sleep)
the fins flash silver
but some flash gold
then suddenly, emerald,
amethyst will these be the mermaids
of which she was told in fragments of poems
in storybooks she wonders
half drowning in her sleep
do they have combs of pearl
do they really sit on the rocks and sing
and what is that music light
but now the daylight fades in the skies
and she has no more wondering left
its used up
like a milky latticed shell upon the beach
whose creature wandered away
the child's body sleeps wrapped in coverlets of cloud
her soul shining under the waters...
