TABLE GRACES
To my sister Sharon
I remember the table graces
We said over our peanut butter sandwiches
On Saturdays, how grape jelly seemed to me like
Communion and it shone like garnets
How my grandfather cut up carrot sticks to go with the
Sandwiches
Or else, they were tuna fish and so delicious
And we ate them while Grandmother taught her music pupils
So that we were listening to classical
piano music polished to silken perfection
On Saturdays while eating our pbjs or our tuna fish sandwiches
And our root beer floats our apples and oranges
And kindness swelled and piano music
And the sun shone all day.
